ChemE Assistant Professor James Carothers was selected as the 2016 Diverse: Issues in Higher Education Emerging Scholar.
Diverse: Issues in Higher Education is a premier newsmagazine that has been providing information to further the education of people of color and other underrepresented groups for over 30 years. Their Emerging Scholars Program honors young minority scholars with unique scholarly accomplishments and commitment to diversity, teaching and community service.
This honor was bestowed on Prof. Carothers for his deep commitment to diversity. While a postdoctoral fellow, he co-founded the Introductory College Level Experience in Microbiology (iCLEM) program of the Joint Bioenergy Institute which provides paid summer internship in bioenergy-related research to low income high school students in San Francisco Bay Area. The successful iCLEM program followed when he joined the UW in 2012. "James's goal is to use applied synthetic biology as a gateway to expand the pool of talent to include more women, people of color, and first-generation college students," says ChemE Chair and Charles W.H. Matthaei Professor François Baneyx. "He is already making an impact: since coming to UW, his lab has hosted over 25 under-represented students from high schools and beginning college outreach program."
