Downloading the Driver

  • Go to the Xerox Driver Download Page
  • Scroll down until you see Xerox Smart Start - Driver Install and click the I agree button and click download.

Installing the Driver/Printer

  • Navigate to where you downloaded the Driver and open it.
  • A License Agreement will popup, click I Agree (otherwise you cannot continue)
  • Click the "Don't See Your Printer" option in the bottom left.
  • Type in the IP addresse provided by ChemeHelp. (IP addresses not posted or safety reasons)
  • On the next screen make sure all options are selected and click install
  • Once completed you will have to change the printers name in the Printer & Scanners Settings as it uses a Default name

  • Double click on the downloaded driver and follow the instructions
  • Type in the IP addresse provided by ChemeHelp. (IP addresses not posted or safety reasons)
  • If it asks for the model of your printer please use
    • Xerox AltaLink C8045

Codes are handed out by ChemE IT and are assigned per individual Faculty or Staff Member. ChemE TAs have one code given to them when they become a Teaching Assistant.

College of Engineering VDI (Virtual Desktop Interface)

  • Who has access to the College of Engineering’s VDI?

    • All students currently enrolled in a core course or professors/teaching assistants teaching a course should have access. If you cannot login, please contact vdihelp@engr.washington.edu.
  • How do I access the VDI?

  • What can I use the VDI for?

    • The College of Engineering’s VDI is only to be used for instructional purposes. If you need a virtual environment for research, please reach out to ChemEHelp@uw.edu.

ChemE Hyak - Instructional and Research

  • What is Hyak?

    • Hyak is part of the University of Washington's cyberinfrastructure plan to support world-class research in every department. Hyak is an ecosystem of high-performance compute (HPC) clusters and supporting infrastructure (e.g., data management, computational training, scientific consulting).
  • Who has access to ChemE's Hyak instance?

    • The ChemE's Hyak instance is open to all Faculty, Researchers, and Students.
  • How do I request access to the Hyak?

    • To gain access to the ChemE Hyak instace please have your PI or Professor email ChemEHelp@uw.edu with your netid and state that they approve your access.
  • What can I do on Hyak and how do I access it?

    • ChemE Hyak operates exclusively on CPUs. The Hyak team provides excellent guidance on what a CPU (Compute Only) is and how to access it once permissions are granted. Hyak Compute documentation

  • Who does the department cover the cost of Aspen for?

    • ChemE covers the cost of all AspenTech Licenses for Instruction. Professors, Teaching Assistants, and Students have access through the VDI for course work only.
  • Can Labs use Aspen for research and is it covered by the department?

    • Yes, labs can use Aspen for reseach, but no it is not covered by the department. Please email ChemEHelp@uw.edu if you would like to use it for your lab.
  • What is the per license cost if a Lab would like to use Aspen?

    • $20/Machine/Year
  • Where is the installer located?

    • To ensure that the product is installed and licensed correctly, ChemE IT needs to install it.
  • What are the restrictions on our AspenTech for research?

    • I can be used for Academic Research only, which means the research should be publicly available and free.
  • If a company sponsors a lab’s research and the findings are published as an academic paper, would this breach the Terms of Service and License Agreement since it was company sponsored?

    • Under Clause 3.4 of the SLA, use of the licensed software in connection with a commercial partner is prohibited unless AspenTech provides express prior written consent. As a non-limiting example, UWashington must obtain AspenTech's express written consent before a company sponsors the lab's research.
  • What are the implications if the research is published, and the paper/research is used or results in a patent?

    • Clause 3.2 of the software license agreement (SLA) permits publication of research results subject to the restrictions of Section 6 of the SLA.
    • All IP rights in AspenTech's licensed software, including patent rights, remain property of AspenTech per Clause 3.5 of the SLA and do not transfer to UWashington. As a non-limiting example, UWashington may not file a patent application related to features or functionality of AspenTech's licensed software but may file a patent application related to research results. AspenTech respectfully requests that UWashington consult with AspenTech before filing any patent application based on research performed using AspenTech's licensed software to ensure AspenTech's IP rights are respected.
  • Who does the department cover the cost of COMSOL for?

    • ChemE covers the cost of all COMSOL Licenses for Instruction. Professors, Teaching Assistants, and Students have access through the VDI for course work only.
  • Can Labs use COMSOL for research and is it covered by the department?

    • No, out COMSOL Academic license prohibits the use for Research purposes.
  • If a Lab would like to use COMSOL for research purposes, how much is the cost?

    • As prices fluctuate, please email ChemEHelp@uw.edu and we will contact our representative to find out the current price.
