NanoMedicine's Rising Young Star - UW ChemE Asst. Professor Elizabeth Nance

UW ChemE
March 6, 2018

Assistant Professor Elizabeth Nance and the Nance lab were recently awarded a $1.8 M award from the NIH. The award is targeted towards Early Stage Investigators, and is part of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) Maximizing Investigator’s Research Award (MIRA) funding mechanism. With this award, the Nance lab will develop quantitative, high resolution imaging and analysis platforms to understand nanoparticle behavior and compartmentalization in tissues, with a specific focus on the brain.

The Nance lab is interested in using nanotechnology both as probes to understand complex environments like the brain, and as therapeutic interventions for the treatment of neurological diseases, including autism, cerebral palsy, and neonatal stroke. The Nance lab integrates in vitro to in vivo models with imaging, molecular biology, and data science tools to extract statistically relevant information that captures changes in the brain microenvironment that might influence how a nanotherapeutic behaves, and hence inform nanotherapeutic design.

For her work in this area, Dr. Nance recently was named the European Union's NanoMed Innovative Training Network Inspiring Young Investigator of 2018. The awardee is nominated and voted on by graduate students in the EU NanoMed training network. Dr. Nance will accept this award, along with giving a talk on the Nance lab work in developing nanotherapeutics, in the Netherlands in April.

Dr. Nance was also recently recognized with the Seattle Chapter’s Association of Women in Science Early Career Achievement award in STEM. The award recognized “a woman who has demonstrated innovative and sustained contribution to education in the field of science, technology, engineering or math (STEM).” More details can be found on the AWIS organization website.
