Undergrads nationwide invited to explore nanotechnology at NUE UNIQUE's
"Nanoscience on the Tip" workshop June 23-27, deadline to apply is April 30

Undergraduate students at UW, community colleges, and schools nationwide are invited to NUE UNIQUE's "Nanoscience on the Tip," a five-day, interactive workshop on nanotechnology from June 23-27 at UW in the GEMSEC facility in Wilcox Hall. The deadline to apply online is Wednesday, April 30.

The National Science Foundation, UW-GEMSEC (NSF MRSEC), Nanosurf AG and nanoScience Instruments sponsor the annual workshop, now in its second year. Students will have opportunities to use a variety of scanning probe microscopes to explore fundamental problems in biology, chemistry, physics and engineering.

“This workshop is truly unique, as it provides each undergraduate student hours of hands-on access to one of the most fascinating tools in nanotechnology,” said Rene Overney, program director of NUE UNIQUE and UW associate professor of chemical engineering.

Four laboratory modules introduce the students to a variety of topics, from surface interactions, capillary forces, thermal transition and electronic properties to reaction kinetics. The students will work in small groups of four. Each of the groups is guided by a teaching assistant.

NUE UNIQUE is a collaborative effort to "develop a nationally replicable model of a sustainable and up-to-date undergraduate teaching laboratory of scanning probe methods applied to nanosciences and nanotechnology."
