Seniors Danny Kress, Álvaro Presenda and Marc Yamamoto competed in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers’ (AIChE) Pacific Northwest Regional Student Research Paper Competition April 25-27 at Washington State University in Pullman, Wash. Kress took first place with his paper titled “Improvement of Fiber-Reinforced Composites." Charles Matthaei inducted into American Society of Baking Hall of Fame (March 2008)
UW Chemical Engineering alumnus Charles Matthaei (BS '43, Distinguished Alumnus '03), chairman of Roman Meal Company, was inducted into the American Society of Baking Hall of Fame in March 2008. Matthaei joins a long list of baking pioneers, including Otto Rohwedder, inventor of the world's first bread-slicing machine. He received a plaque in March 2008 during a ceremony at American Society of Baking facilities in Manhattan, Kansas. More...
Hong Shen wins five-year, $400,000 CAREER Award (March 2008)
Hong Shen, UW assistant professor of chemical engineering, won a five-year, $400,000 CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support her research on using nanomaterials to fight cancers, infections and autoimmune diseases. Her research group plans to develop polymer-coated biominerals to monitor and control activities within the endocytosis pathway, which serves as a cell’s communication hub and gateway to the outside world. Bruce Finlayson wins 2008 CACHE Award (March 2008)
Bruce Finlayson, UW professor emeritus of chemical engineering, won the 2008 CACHE Award for Excellence in Computing in Chemical Engineering Education from the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE). The award, sponsored by the CACHE Corporation and given by ASEE’s Chemical Engineering Division, honors significant contributions in the development of computer aids for chemical engineering education. ASEE will present the award to Finlayson in June at their annual conference in Pittsburgh. More...
Alumni Susie Stenkamp and Richard Zheng win 2007 R&D 100 Award (March 2008)
UW Chemical Engineering alumni Susie Stenkamp (PhD '99) and Richard Zheng (PhD '00) won a 2007 R&D 100 Award from R&D Magazine for developing a compact device that manages heat and recovers water in fuel systems. R&D Magazine gives the awards annually in recognition of the 100 most technologically significant products introduced to the marketplace over the past year. Stenkamp and Zheng accepted the award in October 2007 in Chicago. More...
Alumnus Philip Harding named Linus Pauling Chair at OSU (March 2008)
UW Chemical Engineering alumnus Philip Harding (PhD, 1997) started in September 2007 as the Linus Pauling Chair in the School of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering at Oregon State University (OSU). The position is an endowed, five-year appointment (non-tenure track) intended to bring an individual with broad industrial experience into the department with the objective of improving the workforce readiness of graduating seniors. Shaoyi Jiang, UW professor of chemical engineering and adjunct professor of bioengineering, is researching anti-fouling coatings that may one day keep barnacles from clustering on ship hulls and bacteria from damaging heart valves. Buddy Ratner awarded Pritzker Distinguished Lectureship (January 2008)
Buddy Ratner, UW professor of chemical engineering and bioengineering, has been awarded the Pritzker Distinguised Lectureship by the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES). The lectureship is awarded each year to recognize outstanding achievements and leadership in the science and practice of biomedical engineering. More... |
