2006 Catalyst Article

Thanks to a suggestion from Dianna Blair, UW ChemE PhD 1994, Prof. Ricker has received research funding from Sandia National Labs.  The project objective is to improve methods used by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to detect plutonium diversion from nuclear reactor fuel reprocessing.  Strategies include better sensors at more effective locations and new methods to analyze data coming from the sensors.  Other activities related to his research expertise included teaching the required process control course (CHEM E 480), which had 42 seniors enrolled this year, and serving as editor of two journals:  Journal of Process Control and Control Engineering Practice.  He was also the instructor for 10 UW ChemE seniors who took their final UO lab course in Toulouse, France, this summer (see details on page 5 of Catalyst).  He continues to hone his golf game, and a sea-kayak-construction project has taken over most of his garage.
